Terre Haute, Indiana - William "Bill" Gene Hewitt, 98, of Terre Haute, Indiana, formerly of Paris, Illinois, passed away on March 26, 2026 at his residence. He was born on June 28, 1927 to Florence Jaynes in Hoopeston, Illinois. At the age of 6 years old, he was adopted and raised by Mark and Etta Hewitt of St. Bernice, Indiana.
In high school, Bill played basketball. He attended the local Nazarene Church and sang in the choir. Bill received a scholarship to play basketball in college; however, he decided to go to work for the railroad. He worked for MSTP and P, Milwaukee, and then went on to work for Soo Line and Association for 43 years. After the railroad, Bill drove cars for Mooney Motors in Paris, Illinois. He also worked on the Dyer family farm. Bill loved going to Florida, fishing in Canada, and visiting Colorado. He is survived by his daughter-in-law Jacalyn Hewitt; stepdaughter Pamela Huxford; grandchildren include Cathrina McDonald (Roger), Tamara Black (Brock), Joe DeVillez (Summer), Shane Huxford, Jack (Katherine Rekkas) Hewitt, Rachael (Dane) Molter, Sara (Rob Philpott) Hewitt, Jessie Hewitt. He had many great- and great-great-grandchildren as well.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife Jean Rose Williams Hewitt in 2018; sons Robert Hewitt, Tommy Hewitt, and William G. Hewitt Jr.; stepdaughter Ingrid Huxford and grandson Jarrod DeVillez.
Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, April 6, 2026, 10:00 am. - 12:00 pm and service immediately following at Roselawn Funeral Home, 7500 N. Clinton Street, Terre Haute, IN 47805. His grandson-in-law Brock Black will be officiating services. Entombment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park. Family and friends are welcome to gather after service at deceased residence.
