Walter Lee Huff Obituary

Walter Lee Huff was born May 7, 1930, in Little Rock, Ark., the eldest of seven children of the Rev. Walter Red Huff and Lucy Sterling Huff.

Walter graduated from Dunbar High School, where he excelled in football. After marrying wife, Mabel, in 1949, they moved to Terre Haute. To this union was born one son, Michael Keith. Mabel preceded Walter in death in 1976.

In 1978, Walter married his wife, Doris, and was blessed with seven children in this union. Walter was employed by Alcan Aluminum Corporation and retired after 20 years of service. He also served as a softball referee, as well as assistant scoutmaster for Troop 10, BSA. Walter professed faith in Jesus Christ and was saved Dec. 5, 1982, called to ministry in 1983 and ordained an elder in The Church of God in Christ in 1989. Walter served the church faithfully for 35 years until his death, having served as Sunday School Superintendent for BJ Watkins District, as well as administrative assistant to State Sunday School Superintendent, C.T. Smith, for First Jurisdiction of Indiana. He also served the jurisdiction as assistant to Chief of Security Elder Miles C. Blade.

After a brief illness, Walter went home to be with the Lord at 7:23 p.m. Aug. 7, 2018, surrounded by his wife and family. He fought the good fight, finished his course and kept the faith.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Doris; sons, Curtis Mitchell (Nicole), Brenton Mitchell (Karen) and Prentiss Huff (Neily); daughters, Ila Mitchell, Brenda Huff, Angela Carruthers and Judith Russell; 30 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Mildred Shadowvine and Queen Esther Robinson (Little Rock); sisters-in-law, Releatha Ballentine (Chicago), Dorothy Lewis (Morrow, Ga.), Betty Natt and Barbara Nellum, both of Terre Haute; special niece, Monica Thompson; and a host of nieces; nephews; church family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Michael and Baron; brothers, Floyd and Charles; and sisters, Margaret and Mary Ann.

Visitation will be Friday, Aug. 17, 2018, from 4 until 8 p.m. at Saints Home Church of God in Christ, 2210 North 13th St., Terre Haute, with services Saturday, Aug. 18, 2018, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Mark J. Blade officiating. Services entrusted to Russell Funeral Home.
