Tommy Joe Zurcher Obituary

Center Point, Indiana - CENTER POINT [mdash] Tommy Joe Zurcher, born December 20th, 1938, in Clay City, Indiana to Alberta J. Leichty Zurcher (Fagg) and John J. Zurcher, went home to be with Jesus on September 8th, 2025 at 3:30 P.M. at Hutsonwood of Brazil surrounded by his family.

He was the grandson of Albert and Nellie Liechty of Clay City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, as well as his stepdad Earl Fagg, uncle Herman Leichty, his aunt Rosellen Leichty Olds, a half brother Randy Zurcher, and a great-grandson Alexander Kaine.

As a lifelong resident of Clay County, Tommy worked various small farming jobs until he graduated from Clay City High School in 1956. After a year of working various jobs, he joined the United States Air Force. He served his country overseas in Germany for three years as a military police officer.

Upon his return in 1962, he soon met the love of his life, Mary Ruth Bedwell. After driving to and from Coalmont for over 3 years, she finally said yes and her name became Zurcher on May 15th of 1966, after which they established their home in Center Point.

After 25 years of employment at Pillsbury of Terre Haute, Tommy retired from there and worked for the county highway department until his retirement from there in 2002. He was an active member of Ashboro United Methodist Church. He was also involved in many organizations and clubs. He was a life member of the NRA, a 50-plus-year member of the Masonic Lodge, and an active member of the Indiana Bowhunters Association.

Tommy was an avid bowhunter and competitive archer, and would spend a vast majority of his free time hunting, attending 3D shoots, and just spending time in God's beautiful outdoors. But the time he enjoyed the most was that precious time spent with his loving family.

Survivors of his family include his wife of 59 years Mary Ruth Bedwell Zurcher; and their children Shane Zurcher (Kim) of Clay City, and daughter Jonna Zurcher Stout (Henry) of Beech Grove, as well as an adopted daughter, Chrissy Sturm, of Indianapolis. He also had 6 grandchildren: Heather Davidson (Anthony), Stefanie Brewer (Brandon), Amanda Conners (Daniel), Jace Rudisel, Levi Rudisel (Alyssa), Yoma, and Devin "Bear" Sturm (Meagan). The list continues with 13 great-grandchildren, including: Lucas, Xaunder, Adyn, Char- leigh, Malakai, Liam "little adventure buddy," Skyla, Ronan, Silver, Emily, Evelyn, Stone, and Emmett. He also had extended family that included his sister-in-law Debbie Walls (Monte) of Terre Haute, a nephew Trent Walls (Morgan) of Ellettsville, and several other cousins, as well as 2 very special close friends Marvin Neiswinger and Kenny Slater.

A visitation will be held Friday, September 12th, from 4:00-8:00 P.M. at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, 301 East 8th Street in Clay City. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 3:30 P.M.
