Todd James Thompson Obituary

St. Louis, MO - Todd James Thompson, 73, of St. Louis, Missouri, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, April 24, 2026.

Todd was born on November 19, 1952, in Shelburn, Indiana, to Sherrill and Elizabeth Thompson, who preceded him in death.

A 1970 graduate of North Central High School in Farmersburg, Indiana, Todd went on to earn his engineering degree from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1974. He later completed a master's degree in business from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Todd began his career with McDonnell Douglas in 1976, remaining with the company through its transition to Boeing. Over the course of his distinguished career, he served as a senior design engineer and Aircraft Fuel Subsystems subject matter expert within Boeing's Phantom Works organization. He was respected for his intelligence, dedication, and expertise in his field.

Since beginning his career in St. Louis, Todd made the city his home, where he built a life centered on family, hard work, and his community.

Upon his retirement in 2021, Todd continued pursuing his passion for problem solving by consulting for Boeing and becoming more involved in community work. He served for many years as chairman of the University City Stormwater Issues Commission. Todd also devoted time to researching and documenting family genealogy, uncovering pieces of family history that had previously been unknown.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Phillips Thompson; his son, Justin Thompson (Christine) of Detroit, Michigan; and his daughter, Molly Heininger (Nate) of St. Louis, Missouri. Todd was a proud and loving "Pop" to his cherished granddaughters, Lola and Ruby Heininger.

He is also survived by his siblings: Jay Thompson (Robin) of Rio Rico, Arizona; Dwight Thompson (Lisa) of Nashville, Indiana; Jani Perniconi (Mark) of West Lafayette, Indiana; and Alane Smith (Doug) of Keller, Texas. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Blake Thompson (Anne) and infant brother Brian Thompson.

Additional surviving family members include his sister-in-law Shirley Marshall (Jim) of Oblong, Illinois, and brother-in-law Robert Phillips (Terri) of Graysville, Indiana. He was also preceded in death by his in-laws, Bob and Ruth Phillips, and sister-in-law Jean Thompson.

Todd will be lovingly remembered by several nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, friends, and colleagues whose lives were enriched by his kindness and intelligence.

A celebration of life will take place at a future date.
