St. Mary of the Woods, IN - ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS - Sister Mary Jeanine Schubert, age 84, died May 14, 2026 at 5:28 p.m. in Providence Health Care at St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born Jan. 16, 1942 in Chicago, IL to Andrew J. and Frances M. Simeca Schubert, and was baptized Mary Catherine.

Sister Mary Jeanine entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Sept. 18, 1961 and professed Final Vows on May 23, 1970. She earned a bachelor's degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master's degree from the University of Illinois.

Of her 64 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered in elementary schools for 16 years in Indiana and Illinois. In 1983, she took a position at the American Medical Association in Chicago as a Survey Operations Assistant and later as an employee contractor. Retiring from this position in 2007, she gave much time to sewing and quilting for charities but also creating a variety of unique items for Linden Leaf Gifts. In 2023, she moved to the motherhouse where she dedicated herself totally to the ministries of presence and of prayer.

Sister will lovingly be remembered by many for her infectious and genuine greetings and unique sayings.

Sister Mary Jeanine is survived by a brother, Andrew J. Schubert, Jr., of Niles, IL. She is preceded in death by a brother, Edward Schubert.

The wake is Friday, May 22, 2026 at 3:30 p.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception with the wake service at 4:30 p.m. The wake continues on Saturday, May 23, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. with the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m., Reverend Terry Johnson presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence.
