Lt. Col. Richard Eugene Dickerson, USA, Ret., 68, went home to be with the Lord Oct. 26, 2016. He was a man of few words whose principal purpose in life was to provide "Service to Others." During Richard's enlistment in the U.S. Army he was deployed to Korea. Upon his return home, Richard started Dickerson Decorating, servicing Clay County and the surrounding areas with his painting and contracting skills. The surrounding communities enjoyed Richard's service through his kindness within the VFW and American Legion. Richard's legacy is modeling the importance of "Service to Others" with his wife, Karen, their children and extended family.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar Dickerson and Bernice (Batchelor) Dickerson; and his stepmom, Louise Dickerson. He is survived by his wife, Karen Dickerson; and their two daughters, Crystal Underwood (Tim) and Laura Woodward (Tim). He and Karen are blessed with 11 grandchildren who are beginning to model the spirit of their grandfather's service. Richard has six surviving sisters, Carolyn Hoffman, Marlene Jones, Lana Lucas, Mary Colclasure, Loutetha Whittington and Myrtle Bassett.
A celebration of Richard's life will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Nov. 19, 2016, at Harmony Community Center, 10146 Harmony Border St., Brazil, Indiana. A graveside service will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Clearview Cemetery in Brazil, Indiana, and will conclude with military honors in recognition of Richard's service and sacrifice for our country.
