Maurice Dale Smith, 71, of Rosedale, died at 6:32 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2016, in his residence. He was a retired operating engineer and coal miner with 18 ½ years of service. He was born July 31, 1945, in Johnson County, to the late Nathan Smith and Bertha Huffman Smith.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Linda Frazier Smith, whom he married Oct. 19, 1975, in Lyford; children, Jada (Jason) Svoboda of Fishers, Todd (Anna) Smith of St. Augustine, Fla., Maurice (Sandra) Smith II of Tempe, Ariz., Tobias Smith of Indianapolis and Shane (Elena) Smith of Bloomington; two brothers, David (Linda) Smith of Morgantown and Mike (Sharon) Smith of Trafalgar; one aunt, Ermal White of Franklin; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers; and one sister.

He was a graduate of Morgantown High School and attended Indiana University. He was a member of Operating Engineers 103 in Indianapolis and United Mine Workers of America. He was named Rosedale's Man of the Year in 2011.

Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016, at Cottrell-Gooch Funeral Home, 287 N. Main Street, Rosedale, with Pastor Kyle Andrews officiating. Memorial visitation is 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Saturday. The family request casual dress.
