Mark 'Mike' C. Day Obituary
Mark "Mike" C. Day, 64, of Terre Haute, passed away peacefully at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2016, at Terre Haute Regional Hospital. He had been at home for several months with his son, Joe, as caregiver, battling COPD, congestive heart failure and emphysema. Born March 1, 1952, in Boston, Mass., he was the son of the late Grayce (Powers) Day and the Rev.T. Chipman Day. Mike grew up in Massachusetts, but had lived in Terre Haute since 1992.
Mike graduated from Sudbury Valley School in Massachusetts in 1970, and worked most of his life in the railroad industry. He was employed by the following railroads from 1970 to his retirement in 2008: Boston and Maine, Penn Central, Conrail, South Eastern PA Transportation Authority, Burlington Northern and Canadian Pacific. Mike began as a locomotive fireman at age 18, and worked his way up to control tower operator, train dispatcher, and prior to his retirement, chief assistant train dispatcher at the busy Bensonville Tower near Chicago.
Railroading was also a lifelong passion and hobby of Mike's as evidenced by his large collection of railroad pictures, artifacts, signs and other memorabilia. In Terre Haute, Mike also volunteered on the Board of Wabash Valley Railroading Museum and served as a docent at the Haley Tower site for several years. His knowledge of past and present transportation systems in the Northeast and Mid-West was impressive!
Mike also enjoyed collecting antique radios and bringing them back to working order. In 2012, the Vigo County Historical Society featured his collection as one of their exhibits. Mike's other interests included astronomy, working on antique cars, history and family genealogy, traveling to museums, radio and car shows, camping, and listening to NPR and classical music.
Mike will be remembered for his kindness to animals, as well as people. Mike was generous and willing to "go the extra mile" for family, friends, acquaintances and strangers.
He is survived by his son, Joe Killie of Terre Haute; a sister, Sara Day Dickey (husband Barry) of Waynesboro, Pa.; as well as two nieces; and one nephew.
A private service of remembering will be held. The Rev. Danielle Neff, Mike's niece, will be the Officiant.
