Margaret Tamar Obituary
Terre Haute, IN - TERRE HAUTE - Margaret Tamar passed away peacefully at the age of 101 on April 26, 2026, after a long and happy life.
Margaret was born in Wiesendangen, Switzerland on April 23,1925 and then decided to see the world by moving to Paris in her early twenties before traveling via ship to New York City in 1950. She was employed as a governess teaching the French language, one of four languages in which she was fluent. She spent her winter weekends as a ski instructor for the Swedish Ski Club in Vermont.
She met her husband Henry at a concert in Central Park. They were married for 59 years before Henry passed away in 2014. They had three boys and moved to Terre Haute in 1962 when Henry joined the faculty at Indiana State University.
Margaret became involved with the ISU Faculty Wives and Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority where she mentored many students. She was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church for 63 years, where she taught Sunday School and became a Deacon. Margaret was a gourmet cook and appeared on local television teaching cooking classes. She then worked at The Canister store in Meadows Shopping Center and The Company Coffee at Honey Creek Square for several years and developed many new friendships there.
She was devoted to her family and their activities, including hiking, bird watching with the Wabash Valley Audubon Society, traveling throughout the world and visiting her friends.
She leaves three sons and their families, Earl (Erin), Allen (Suzanne), and Mark (Candia) with five grandchildren, Mitchell, Hillary, Claire, Matthew and Christian.
She was a force of nature, with a positive attitude and deep faith. She had a generous heart and was an inspiration to her family. A light has gone out in the world, but now there is a new shining star in the heavens.
She spent her last years living at Westminster Village and gained many caring friends there.
A memorial service is planned at Central Presbyterian Church to honor her memory on May 30, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The family has entrusted DeBaun Funeral Homes with arrangements.
