St. Mary of the Woods, IN - ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS - Sister Margaret Norris, age 94, of St. Mary-of-the-Woods, IN, died on November 3, 2025 at Union Hospital, Terre Haute. She was born on Jan. 5, 1931 in Jasper, IN to Oliver L. and Emma Cannon Norris and was baptized Margaret Ann.

Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on July 22, 1949 and was given the name Sister Marie Angeline. She professed Final Vows on Jan. 23, 1957. She earned a bachelor's degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master's degree from Indiana University. Of the 76 years as a Sister of Providence, she taught 49 years in schools in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and North Carolina.

INDIANA: Assumption, Evansville, 1960-62; St. Michael, Greenfield (teacher/principal), 1965-69; Tenth Street School, Jasper, 1968-78; Jasper Middle School, Jasper, 1978-83; Fifth Street School, Jasper, 1983-2001.

ILLINOIS: Immaculate Conception, Norwood Park, 1952-54; Maternity BVM, Chicago, 1954-56.

NORTH CAROLINA: Blessed Sacrament, Burlington, 1957-60.

MISSOURI: Annunziata, St. Louis, 1962-65.

Always athletic, after retiring from teaching she worked in an exercise facility for two years and also studied massage therapy. In 2008, she returned to the motherhouse where she offered massage to her sisters.

Sister Margaret has been described a person with a most gentle heart and steady, strong hands. She was dedicated to whatever her current ministry was be that as a volunteer at Providence Food Pantry or The Helping Hands, both in West Terre Haute. She brought joy to persons whom she met on her walks and runs. She ran the Boston Marathon several times, finishing in under four hours, thus qualifying for a medal. Her kind and generous spirit will be missed by all who loved her.

Sister Margaret is survived by nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph, Bill, and Jerry Norris; and two sisters, Bernice Beck and Emiline Norris.

The wake is on Nov. 21 beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception with the commentary beginning at 10:50 a.m. The Memorial Mass begins at 11:00 a.m., Reverend Terry Johnson presiding. Because Sister Margaret donated her body to science, the interment will be held at a later date in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence.
