Joseph John Hawthorne Obituary

Joseph John Hawthorne, 78, of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed away peacefully at 12:02 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, 2017, in his residence, surrounded with his family by his side. He retired from the United States Air Force, serving from Dec. 20, 1956, to Sept. 30, 1977. He was also employed by Columbia Records in Terre Haute and IBM in Greencastle employed from 1983 retiring in 2008.

He was born Sept. 1, 1938, in Patterson, New Jersey, to the late Harold Edward and Jessie Lovito Hawthorne. After enlisting with the Air Force he was stationed in Rockville and on April 25, 1959, he married May Moore at St. Joseph Catholic Church, and she survives. Also surviving, one daughter, Jessie (Randy) Lund of Cloverdale; four sons, Leon (Kim) Hawthorne of Austintown, Ohio, Stan (Veronica) Hawthorne of Terre Haute, Mike Hawthorne of Terre Haute and Darold (Terri) Hawthorne of West Terre Haute; one brother, Harold (Carol) Hawthorne of Saddle Brook, New Jersey; 11 grandchildren, Christina Blanton, Jennifer Lund, Amanda Lund, Matthew Lund, Leon Hawthorne, Nathan Hawthorne, Michaela Hawthorne, Joseph Hawthorne, Garrett Hawthorne, Michael Wolf and Brantley Mathas; one great-grandchild, Bailey Blanton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Anthony Dale Hawthorne.

He was a 1956 graduate of Eastside High School in Patterson. He enjoyed watching western movies. He was an avid Indianapolis Colts, Denver Broncos and wrestling fan. He loved his family and spending time with them.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 201 E. Ohio St., Rockville, with Father John Hollowell officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Garden Cemetery, Rockville. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at Gooch Funeral Home, 112 W. Howard St., Rockville.
