Joseph R. "Bob" Bryan, 77, of Terre Haute, died at 1:43 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2016, at Union Hospital in Terre Haute. He was born Feb. 15, 1939, in Coloma, Ind., to the late Henry and Florence Edith Davis Bryan. Bob was the youngest of seven children. He married Edith Mattick on July 26, 1969 and she survives.
He served in the United States Army from 1961-1967. He drove a Howitzer while patrolling the Berlin Wall. He was baptized Aug. 5, 1979, and was a member of the Friendship Missionary Baptist Church of Joppa. He was ordained as a deacon of the church Feb. 28, 1988. He was a democrat precinct committeeman for Otter Creek Township A beginning in 1980 until 2004 in Vigo County. He was a member of the American Legion Wayne Newton Post 346 in Terre Haute and a charter member of Wabash Valley Genealogy Society. Bob always spoke about the places he lived and throughout his life he lived in 26 different locations. He had many occupations, mostly farming. He was employed by Terre Haute Malleable for 17 years, part of that time he was foreman. He then retired after 18 years service with the Vigo County Courthouse maintenance department. His interest was anything his son and grandkids were into. He was a member of three square dance clubs, he mostly enjoyed round dancing. He enjoyed dirt track racing and watching C.J. race. Bob also enjoyed researching family history.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, James Brown; siblings, Pearl Crabtree, Gene Bryan, Helen Bryan, Maxine Bryan and Mary O'Brien; brothers-in-law, Sherman Crabtree and Thomas A. Jones; sister-in-law, Mona Bryan. Survivors include his wife, Edith; son, C.J. and wife Dina Bryan; granddaughter, Cale Jenee Bryan; stepgrandson, George Gregory Pitts III; stepgranddaughter, Jessica Pitts; and stepgreat-granddaughter, Gracelynn Pitts; sister, Martha M. Jones; brother-in-law, William E. O'Brien and wife Doris; several nieces and nephews; many special friends he called family. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff of Union Hospital for the care he received.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at Cottrell-Gooch Funeral Home, 287 N. Main St., Rosedale, with the Rev. Randy McPike officiating. Burial will follow at Rosedale Cemetery.
