Terre Haute, Indiana - TERRE HAUTE - John Charles Waters, age 93, died peacefully at the Union Hospital Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care on October 19, 2025.
He was born on April 13, 1932 in Pana, Illinois to Oliver Cromwell Waters and Florence Sissel Waters.
John is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, John J. and Penny Waters of Cartersville, Georgia; his granddaughters and their families also of Cartersville, Abbey and Charlie Culverhouse (Anna Jo and Henry) and Kenzie Waters and Michael Black (Cameron); his daughter, Connie S. Waters of Terre Haute, Indiana; his sister-in-law, Marietta Cooper of Fontanet, Indiana; and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Eva; his wife, Marlene; his brothers, James Waters, Oliver Waters Jr., and Donald Waters; and his sisters, Ada Tillery, Patricia Kelley, and Margaret Waters; and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
John graduated from Fontanet High School in 1950. He married the love of his life, Marlene, on December 29, 1950. They were married for 74 years until her death in May, 2025.
John worked on the railroad, the Arketex clay plant, Anaconda Aluminum, General Houseware and I.S.U. as an industrial electrician and electrical supervisor. His favorite job was working as one of the Grumpy Old Men for Wabash Valley Habitat for Humanity. John was a lifelong member of the Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd degree Master Mason.
John was a wonderful Dad, Gramps, GP, and Paw. He deeply loved his family and verbally expressed daily gratitude for each of them. He was a good, kind man and was generous with his electrical and handyman skills with his family, friends, and neighbors.
The family would like to thank the dedicated staff of Hospice of the Wabash Valley for their excellent care for the past year.
Greiner Funeral Home assisted with cremation. Visitation will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at Greiner Funeral Home at 2005 N. 13th Street. A memorial service will begin at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday with Pastor Lowell Gisel officiating.
