Terre Haute, Indiana - James Arthur Petty (Jay), 75 of Terre Haute, passed away at home on Oct. 16, 2025. Jay retired from Midwestern Gas Transmission Co in Paris, IL and the Tennessee Gas Pipeline.

He grew up on Wonder Lake in southern Vigo County with his parents, Daniel "Oren" Petty and Mary Patricia Petty (Goodrich); and brothers Robert "Bob" Petty and Michael "Mike" Petty. Their father taught them the value of hard work, pride and charity, and there was no man greater in his eyes than his father. The "Petty Boys" were well known around the lakes and no doubt their antics, family lake parties and cookouts are remembered by those who knew them to this day. Jay was an avid outdoorsman in his youth, enjoying fishing, camping and hunting small game. He still spoke of his Boy Scouting days when his father was troop leader with fondness and pride. Jay was awarded the highest honor of "Order of the Arrow" at 15 and Camp Krietenstein held a very special place in his heart and were some of his most cherished memories.

Jay was preceded in death by his parents; the love of his life Janetta; and his brother Mike.

He is survived by brother Robert Petty (Francis "Frankie"); 4 Children: Lisa Pine (Bill); Robin Petty; Jason Petty (Phyllis); and Daniel "Danny" Petty; 7 Grandchildren: Nikolaos Pine (Kyla) and Drew Pine (Whitney); Brittany Petty (Justin) and Richard Jenkins III (Carissa); Hanna and Daniel Petty; and Joshua Jeffries (Mandi); 16 Great-Grandchildren: Airianna, Ethan, and Elaina (Drew & Whitney); Luca (Nikolaos & Kyla); James, Jayden, Jaxon, Jazmine and Joshua (Brittany); Richard IV and Piper (Richard); Mila and Makai (Hanna); Alya (Daniel); Emaleigh and Adilyn (Joshua & Mandi); and several cousins.

Samaritan Funeral Home of Terre Haute assisted with the family choice of cremation. There will be no public services at this time. A private family celebration of life may be held at a later date.
