James Edward Mullens ('Jim') Obituary

Cory, IN - CORY - James "Jim" Edward Mullens transitioned from this earth into the arms of Jesus on January 28, 2026, peacefully, at Regional Hospital with his family by his side. He is no longer suffering and was never a burden to anyone.

He was born June 24, 1938, at home near Blackhawk, Indiana. Jim graduated from Blackhawk High School in 1956 and attended Indiana State Teacher's College. He began his work career as an electrician in Indianapolis but spent most of his working years in Grand Rapids, Michigan, then Plainfield, Indiana. Jim worked for Superior Industrial Supplies traveling over much of Michigan and Indiana. After retiring from Superior, he worked at Lowe's in Terre Haute, retiring at age 65.

He was a member of the Cory Nazarene Church and spearheaded the construction of their Community Outreach Building, The ROC. He sang in the church choir and in the Clay County Community Choir. Jim was also instrumental in obtaining industrial kitchen equipment for the Community Center in Blackhawk.

Jim was a big "cut-up" and liked a good joke. He dearly loved his family and enjoyed all the family reunions and made a special effort the last few years to call and/or text each living cousin to encourage attendance at the reunions. He loved playing dominos and the card game of euchre on family game days. Jim was a dearly loved and loving older brother, dad, and granddad. Family was the most important to him.

Jim had a strong work ethic and was extremely frugal, no doubt due to the lean years growing up and his parents living through the Depression. Family would lovingly laugh at the old pair of shoes or "ratty" shirt he wore because they were "just broke in." And like his mother, he never threw things away.

He had an avid interest in WWII Aircraft, maybe because of his uncles serving in WWII. A highlight was Jim getting to ride in a B29 Flying Super Fortress at Hulman Field.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil Mullens and Eleanor Hunter Mullens Walters; beloved wife of 40 years, Liann Burt Mullens; granddaughter Jennifer Mullens; special nephew Randy Harmless; 32 aunts and uncles; and several cousins whom he loved dearly.

He is survived by his children, Thomas "Tom" and Carold Bechtel Mullens, Timothy "Tim" and Deborah Mullens, and Terry "TJ" and Rob Mullens; loving companion Carol Sue Fagg, and her son Rodney Lauren; grandchildren Elyssa and Wes Chubb, Ian and Dayna Mullens, Johnny and Erin Mullens, Justin Mullens, Josh and Erika Mullens, Jessica and Greg Zigler, Andrew and Melanie Reynolds, Ellen and AJ Tedeschi, Jonathon Day, and Andrew and Emily Day; great-grandchildren Jaeda Mullens, Jaxon Mullens, Daizie Mullens; Michael, Maddie, and Hannah Chubb; Noa and Tyson James Mullens; Josie Mullens; Caroline, Eleanor, and Arthur James Mullens; Olivia Zigler; Marian, Cameron, and Matthew Reynolds; Evie and Arthur Tedeschi; and Emma, Blaine, Mason, Theo, Blakley, and Letti Day; sisters Sharon "Sherry" and Larry Wright, and Sheila and Tom Mitchell; sister-in-law Dian and Allan Roderick; special niece Kim Wade; nieces and nephews Jacob and Courtney Hengehold Wade, Mike Wade, Andrew and Gina Bera Harmless, Gina Pierce, Brenda Harmless, Adam Harmless, Rachel and John Petrowsky, Shawn and Jennifer Roderick, Dawn and Sam Travis, Christopher Roderick, Christy Everhart, and Cindy Thomas; "adopted family" Christa and Phil Porto and children Jonah and Myles; and Asie, Avee Jeffers.
