James O. Hanner Obituary

BLOOMINGDALE - James O. Hanner, 70, of Bloomingdale, passed away at his home at 1:17 p.m. on Thursday, November 17, 2022.

Jim was born in Terre Haute on September 17, 1952 to the late Clelland J. Hanner and Mary Alice Bledsoe Hanner.

Jim graduated from Turkey Run High School, Wabash College, and the Indiana University McKinney School of Law. He practiced law in Rockville for 45 years with much of that time spent practicing with his father and his brother, Gary. Jim was an accomplished trial attorney and civil mediator. He served as the Chief Deputy Prosecutor of Parke County from 1977 to 1978, as Prosecutor of Parke County from 1979 to 1986, and as Deputy Prosecutor of Putnam County from 2005 until 2018. Most recently, Jim served as a Public Defender in Putnam, Sullivan, and Vermillion counties.

Jim was quick-witted and had an incredible sense of humor. He had the natural ability to find common ground with people from all walks of life. He fiercely loved his family and often put their needs well above his own. He was a lifelong student of history, loved a wide range of music and movies, enjoyed driving his hot rod, and had a deep connection with the land where he built his cabin and raised his family. He will be deeply missed by many.

Survivors include his three children, Erin R. Hanner of Bloomingdale, Benjamin F. Hanner and his wife Emily of Victor, Idaho, and Chelsea R. Hanner Kurth and her husband, Eric, of Indianapolis; one grandson, Max Hanner; two granddaughters, Gillian and Cora Hanner; one sister, Barb Earl (Neil) of Bloomingdale; three brothers, Brad Hanner (Emily) of Holland, Indiana, Gary Hanner (Mary) of Rockville, and Joe Hanner (Linda) of Marshall; several nieces and nephews; and his loyal friend and dog, Oprah.

Jim was a member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 48, Indiana Freemasons Lodge No. 314, Elks Lodge No. 2471, and VFW Auxiliary No. 1752.

There will be a gathering of family and friends at the American Legion in Rockville on Tuesday, November 22, 2022 from 4-7 p.m. for those who wish to share memories about Jim. A celebration of Jim's life will be held at a later time.

Memorials, should friends so desire, may be made in Jim's memory to the James O. Hanner Legacy Scholarship Fund, c/o Parke County Community Foundation, P.O. Box 276, Rockville, IN 47872.
