Gary Karl Scroggins Obituary

Brazil, Indiana - BRAZIL - Gary Karl Scroggins was born on October 24, 1950, to Sonny and Del Scroggins of Springfield, Missouri. Gary graduated from Greenwood Laboratory School in 1968 and Southwest Missouri State University in 1971. He completed a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary.

Finding his calling during his youth at First & Calvary Presbyterian Church in Springfield, Missouri, he served numerous congregations, including First Presbyterian Church of Libertyville, Illinois and Sunnyside Presbyterian Church in South Bend, Indiana. He found his home for thirty years with the congregation at First Presbyterian Church in Brazil, Indiana. He was active with the Walk to Emmaus community, often serving as a spiritual leader for participants seeking to strengthen and deepen their discipleship.

Gary was devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife of more than 40 years, Sandra Serdar Scroggins; and brothers-in-law Jeff and Sherry Serdar and Neal Serdar; his sister Susan and Don Powell; his four children, Eloise Eve, Amanda and Jason Baker, Stefan Scroggins and Kelsey and Brad Owens; his grandchildren Maya, Max, Rowan and Wren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Ann and her husband "Butch" Laurenson, and sister-in-law Pat Page.

He was a light to all that knew him. Endlessly curious, Gary was a fan of music, literature, art, photography, and nature. Ever the storyteller, he inspired parishioners with more than fifty years of sermons and life lessons. He brought joy to the many fans of his band, Graybeard. He could always be found with his camera and saw beauty through his lens in places others might miss.

Gary leaves a legacy of joy. He entered a room and walked out with new friends. In a career spanning more than five decades, he walked alongside others through their lowest valleys and highest peaks. He was a mentor to many in the faith community, the patriarch of an adoring family and a beloved member of the many communities he serves.
