Edward E. Marvel (Ed) Obituary

Greencastle, Indiana - Edward E. Marvel, 83 of Brazil, passed away February 8, 2026, at 6:56am at The Waters in Greencastle, with his children by his side.

Ed was born in Terre Haute, the first son of Oliver Russel Marvel and Vera Lorraine Foy Marvel. From an early age, he developed a deep love for baseball, first playing Little League while living in Terre Haute. He graduated from Gerstmeyer High School in 1960 and went on to attend Indiana State University, earning degrees in Physical Education and Biology in 1964. He later received his master's degree in 1971.

Ed devoted a total of 35 years to education. He began his teaching career in Hutsonville, Illinois in 1965. The following year, he returned closer to home, teaching science at Rosedale Elementary and Junior High School, where he also served as Varsity Baseball Coach and Junior Varsity Basketball Coach. In 1966, he joined the staff at Staunton High School, again coaching Varsity Baseball and serving as an assistant basketball coach, including at times for the 7th and 8th grade teams. He thoroughly enjoyed his years as a biology teacher and coach. Following school consolidation, he continued teaching biology at Northview High School, where he retired in 1999.

Ed was a member of the Indiana State University Alumni Association and the Clay County Retired Teachers Association.

Baseball remained a lifelong passion. Known as an exceptionally talented right-handed pitcher and third baseman, Ed played alongside many outstanding athletes, including Tommy John. His baseball career included Babe Ruth League, American Legion-Wayne Newton Team (All-Stars League Champions, 1958), AAA Farm League, Indiana State University Baseball, the Volkers Adult Senior Dream Team, the 2003 Phoenix World Series, and the Senior League Series. When he was no longer able to play, he could still be found at the ballpark in any capacity possible. He truly loved baseball.

In addition to baseball, Ed enjoyed bowling, fishing, treasure hunting, attending auctions, and playing cards-especially poker with friends. Above all, his greatest joy was being a devoted dad and grandpa.

Survivors include his children, Lori Mayle and husband Mike of Brazil, and Scott Marvel and wife Angie of West Terre Haute; grandchildren, Mara Whitman (Logan), Macy Webster (Brian), Kyle Marvel (Avery), Anthony Marvel and Hailey Marvel (Logan); great-grandchildren, Maylee, Tate, Abe, Ruby, Hank, Kaidrick, Huxlynn, Henzlee, Liam, and Lain; his brother Jon Marvel and wife Teresa; nephews, Matthew Marvel (Robin), Jonny Marvel and Jordan Marvel (Kristen); Scott's mother, Jan Medley, along with extended family and a host of friends.

Cremation has been chosen. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 14, at 1:00pm at the Lawson-Miller Chapel, with his granddaughter's husband, Brian Webster officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the CYL Baseball Program, P.O. Box 18, Brazil, IN. 47834
