Brazil, Indiana - Donald "Mert" Lee Mercer, 90, passed away March 10, 2026 at his residence. Don was born to the late Gail and Ethel (Grosjean) Mercer on April 12, 1935 in Brazil.


Don graduated from Brazil High School. After high school he attended Indiana State University where he earned his Bachelor's degree. He worked for the Brazil Times as an advertising executive for several years before he began at the Tribune Star. He continued at the Tribune Star until his retirement in 1997. On February 14, 1988 Don married Betty Brinza. Don was an avid IU fan, no matter the sport, he was cheering the Hoosiers on. He enjoyed watching classic movies and listening to Frank Sinatra. He also loved watching NFL games and college basketball on TV.


Don was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a brother, Gail Mercer, and a sister, Jeanette Boswell.


Don is survived by his stepchildren, Tammy Brinza of Indianapolis, Todd (Tanya) Brinza of Terre Haute, and Troy (Sally) Brinza of San Diego, California, grandchildren, Dr. Milton Brinza II, Aria Brinza, Hanna Manka, Sterling Manka, Lexi Brinza, and Chad Brinza, and great grandson, Beckham Brinza.


A visitation will be held Saturday March 14th from 11-1 P.M. at Lawson-Miller Chapel, 1702 East National Avenue in Brazil. A funeral service, officiated by Pastor Larry Kelsheimer will begin at 1 P.M. Burial will follow at Cottage Hill Cemetery.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to an animal shelter of your choice.
