West Terre Haute, Indiana - WEST TERRE HAUTE - David "Dave" Ralph Auten, Sr., 73, of West Terre Haute, passed away surrounded by his loving family after courageously facing health challenges in recent years.

Born on September 17, 1952, Dave lived a life full of love, laughter, and generosity.

He was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Irene Auten; and his beloved wife, Patty Auten, whom he faithfully cared for throughout her battle with cancer. His devotion to her and to his family was unwavering.

Dave is survived by his children, David Auten and spouse Will Marts, and Mike Auten and wife Abby. He was a proud and adoring papaw to his grandchildren Jade, Sydney, Alexander, and Reese, who were truly the joy of his life. He also leaves behind his siblings Diane Hunt (Mike), Terry Auten, Richard Auten (Kay), and Carl Auten (Kathy); along with many nieces and nephews who will deeply miss him.

Dave worked in the grocery business his entire life, where he built countless friendships and never missed the chance to chat or hunt for a good deal. He never met a stranger and had a gift for making everyone feel welcome. Outside of work, he loved watching his grandchildren play sports, playing pickleball, and cheering for his favorite teams - the Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Hoosiers, and Indiana Pacers.

Above all, Dave was the best father, husband, papaw, and father-in-law anyone could ask for. His love for his family knew no bounds, and he would do anything for the people he cared about.

A funeral service will be held at Greiner Funeral Home, on Monday, October 6, 2025, at 1:00p.m. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday, from 11:00a.m. until service time. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. To honor Dave's love of sports, the family invites those attending to wear attire representing his favorite teams or their colors - red for IU, blue for the Colts, or Pacers gear. Casual sports team apparel is encouraged as a celebration of the way Dave lived and cheered.
