Daniel Karl Wunderlich (Dan) Obituary

Daniel (Dan) Wunderlich, age 74, died on Tuesday, April 10th, 2024 in Louisville, KY.

Dan, the son of Donald and Kathryn (Thompson) Wunderlich, was born on April 22nd, 1949 in Harvey, Illinois. He graduated from Thornton Township High School in 1967. Dan received a gymnastics scholarship from Indiana State University where he finished 7th in the vault in 1971's NCAA finals.

After receiving his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from I.S.U., he married Margaret Ann Wiley on December 16th, 1972 and entered his lifelong profession of education, teaching chemistry and coaching gymnastics at Oak Park and River Forest High School in Oak Park, IL. He then received his Master's in Science Education from Concordia University.

Feeling a call back to their roots, Dan and Margaret moved back to Terre Haute, IN in 1979. Dan began teaching chemistry at Terre Haute South as well as coaching girls' gymnastics and boys' soccer, and leading various academic teams, including the Junior Engineering Technical Society which won the national title in 2011. He remained a staple and innovator in high school education until his retirement from South in 2012.

Dan racked up numerous accolades in his 40 years in education, but his brightest moments can be summed up in helping start the Hall of Distinction, which spotlights former South Braves who are out in the world, bringing honor and distinction to Terre Haute South.

Outside of education, Dan loved fishing, music, and seeing his grandchildren flourish.

He is survived by his four children, Erikah Fox of Louisville, KY, Brent (Isabel) of The Woodlands, TX, Aaron (Lissandra) of The Colony, TX, and Adriane (Luis) Mendoza of Jacksonville, FL; eight grandchildren, Eryn, John, and Danika Fox, Oliver and Maia Wunderlich, Matteo and Alexander Wunderlich, and Luis Mendoza; two brothers, Steven (Belinda) and Robert (Joan) of Richardson, TX; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.

Dan will be laid to rest in Restland Cemetery in Dallas, TX after a private ceremony. There will be a celebration of life held July 13, 2024 at The Country Club of Terre Haute from 10am to 2pm.

The Wunderlich siblings wish to thank Helping Hands, Magnolia Springs Whipps Mill, Hosparus Health and caregivers Mary and Chiquita for their loving care of Dan. In lieu of flowers, donations to Cure PSP and Terre Haute South Vigo Hall of Distinction would be appreciated.
