Terre Haute, IN - TERRE HAUTE - Beverly Jean (Smith) Black was born on July 18, 1934, in Webster City, Iowa, and grew up in Kamrar, Iowa. She married Gary Black in 1953 and later married Joel Rigter in 2017.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Anson and Merle Smith; her sister, Marley Thomas; her husband, Gary Black; her son, Kurt Black; and her husband, Joel Rigter.
Bev is survived by her son, Dr. Steven Black (Linda) of Sullivan, Indiana; and their children, Neil Black (Michelle) of St. Louis, Missouri - parents to Lorelei and Adam, and Dr. Kayla Black Rector (Casey) - parents to Zoey, Lainey, and Cora.
She is also survived by her daughter, Penny Black; and Penny's children, Megan Buzzard and Rachel Black, of Atlanta, Georgia.
Her daughter, Angie West (Les) of Atlanta, Georgia; and their children, Emma and Fletcher, also survive her.
Additional survivors include her daughter-in-law, Joanne Black, of Thousand Oaks, California.
Bev had a deep love of Jesus and a lifelong passion for travel, visiting more than 30 countries. She also served through true behind-the-scenes volunteer work, participating in over 25 mission trips, most of them international. Throughout her journeys, she made deep friendships wherever she was, leaving a lasting impact on people across the world.
The family will welcome visitors on Thursday, October 16, 2025 at DeBaun Springhill Chapel from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. A memorial service will begin at the funeral home at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in remembrance of Bev may be made to the Tourette Association of America at https://tourette.org/.
