Barbara Joan Nasser Obituary

Terre Haute, Indiana - TERRE HAUTE - Barbara Joan "Joan" Nasser, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2025, at the Gibson Family Center/VNA Hospice, surrounded by her loving family. Born on April 25, 1929, to Elza Ray and Kathryn McKibban Gore, Joan lived a long, full, and joy-filled life centered around family, community, and hard work.

Joan married the love of her life, Mike Nasser, on October 7, 1950, and together they built both a family and a legacy through Mike's Market, the family grocery store that became a cornerstone of the community. Joan poured her heart and soul into the store, working side by side with Mike and greeting generations of customers who became like family. Known for her warm smile and kind spirit, she could most often be found in her familiar pink chair at the front of the store, welcoming everyone who walked through the doors.

Beyond her dedication to the market, Joan's greatest joy came from being with her family. She delighted in family gatherings filled with love, laughter, and the energy of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her three devoted children [mdash] Jeri Lynn Stark (Dennis), Steven Nasser (Kelly), and Mika Jo Cassell (Dave) [mdash] and her cherished grandchildren: David Stark (Janelle), Chris Cassell (Kristy), Suzanne Marrs (Billy), Scott Cassell (Katie), Kayla Haynes (Geoff), Kourtney Enterline (Lakai), Michael Nasser (Kendall), and Molly Depasse (Brian). Joan's love continues through her 20 great-grandchildren, each one a bright light in her life.

She is also survived by her special nephews, Tom Layman (Sandi) and Wayne Gore (Susan); and great-niece, Ashley Layman, who held a very dear place in her heart.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Mike Nasser, her parents Elza Ray and Kathryn McKibban Gore, her sister Evelyn Layman (Carl), and her brother Elza Gore (Alice).

Joan was a proud graduate of Garfield High School, Class of 1947, after attending Ray Elementary School and McLean Junior High School. She was also a dedicated member of the Order of the Eastern Star for an extraordinary 75 years, a testament to her loyalty, faith, and service to others.

Joan's life was a beautiful reflection of love, hard work, and devotion [mdash] to her family, her community, and the people she cherished. Her memory will live on in the laughter of her grandchildren, the kindness she showed to all, and the legacy of a life well and lovingly lived.

A private family graveside burial will be held at a later date.
