Anna Katherine 'Kate' Scholfield Meehling
Anna Katherine "Kate" Scholfield Meehling was born Jan. 18, 1926 in Marshall, IL, to John and Opal Richards Scholfield and was the granddaughter of Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court John Scholfield and his wife Emily Bartlett Scholfield and the Rev. John W. Richards and his wife Sarah Weir Richards.
Kate as she was known by many was baptized in the United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of the Marshall High School class of 1944. She was a student of art at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods for a semester in the WED program. After working as a clerk-typist in St. Louis during WW II, she returned to work at the Clark County Ration Board and later for six years at the Dulaney National Bank. In 1951 she married William F. Meehling at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Surviving are three children, Melinda Anne Meehling of Charleston, IL, Thomas Warren Meehling of Avon, IN, and William Donald Meehling of Western Springs, IL; three grandchildren, Nicole, Madeline and Nathan Meehling; nieces, Kathy Hinkle, Karen and Beth Scholfield, and Marjann Shawler; and nephews, Michael and John Millhouse, and David and Donald Shawler. In addition to her parents and husband Bill, who preceded her in death in 2019, she was preceded in death by a brother, Warren Scholfield in 1965; a sister, Betty Juranko in 2006; a brother-in-law, the Rev. Donald Meehling in 2010; a sister-in-law, Virginia Shawler in 2017; and a brother-in-law, Omer Shawler in 2018.
She was active in the Gaslight Art Colony, Antique Study Club, P.E.O Sisterhood Chapter KP of Paris, IL, and St. Mary's Catholic Church of Marshall. She also served on the Marshall Public Library Board and the Sheldon Swope Art Museum Board of Overseers at Terre Haute, IN. She also served the Marshall community delivering for the Meals on Wheels program for many years.
Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated 2:00 PM Saturday in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Marshall with the Rev. Augustine Koomson as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be 12 noon till 1:45 PM Saturday at Pearce Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gaslight Art Colony or to Harlan Hall.
