Alberta Cottongim Obituary

Alberta Cottongim, 87, of Rockville, died at 3:25 pm Friday, June 3, 2016, in her residence. She retired in 1984 with 33 years of service from A.T.&T as a telephone operator having worked in Salina, Kan., and Indianapolis. She was born April 24, 1929, in Salina, to the late Earl M. Brotton and Elva Owings Brotton.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Leon E. Cottongim, whom she married March 3, 1956, in Indianapolis; also surviving, one daughter, Marsha (John) Standish of Indianapolis; one son, Mark (Gina) Cottongim of Jamestown; five grandchildren, Joe Standish, Holly Standish Curtis, Samantha Richardson, Evan Standish and Kenny Cottongim; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She had resided in Parke County since 1968. She was a member of the Otterbein United Methodist Church, where she taught children's church for 20 years. She was an active supporter of Samaritan's Purse. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Ladies of the Lake. She volunteered many years at Billie Creek Village with an antique telephone display. She also collected antique telephones.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 9, 2016, at Gooch Funeral Home, 112 W. Howard St., Rockville, with Pastor Matthew Eckart officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Moriah Cemetery, north of Hollandsburg. Visitation is noon until 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Friends may sign on online guest register at:
