Virgil Ellis Alkire, 79, of Terre Haute, passed away at 3:45 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, 2017, in Signature Healthcare in Terre Haute. He retired as a truck driver after many years of service. He was born Sept. 13, 1937, in West Terre Haute, to Dall Alkire and Malinda Peters Alkire.
Survivors include, his wife, Anita Marlene Atterson Alkire; a son, Steve Alkire (Angi) of Terre Haute; four daughters, Melody Pemberton (Randy) of Bedford, Tina McCauley (Jeff) of Mooresville, Diana Alkire (fiancé' William Boone) of Sullivan, and Tammy Pruitt (Jack) of West Terre Haute; two sisters, Charolette Beck and Shirley Stone; two brothers, Glen Alkire and Pastor Kenneth Alkire; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jeffery Caton; granddaughter, Patti Ann Caton; grandson, Travis Pruitt; daughter-in-law, Kathy Caton; three brothers and four sisters.
Virgil served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of the American Legion Post 328 at Riley. He was an avid ham radio operator and he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and NASCAR racing with Dale Earnhart Sr. being his favorite driver.
A celebration of life will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, 2017, at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 3001 Maple Ave, Terre Haute, with Pastor Kenneth Alkire officiating.
