Vera's Story

Text size

Vera Mae Ratcliff entered eternal life with her daughter, Vicki, by her side on June 14, 2017. Her memory is carried on by her three daughters, Robin (Stephen) Heng, Gail Ratcliff and Vicki (Rick) Radavich.
Vera was born on Aug. 16, 1941, in Elmhurst, Ill., to Esther Blecke and Wesley Landen. Vera married Robert (Bob) on Sept. 16, 1966. Vera met Bob at a bowling alley in Addison, Ill. She considered it the luckiest night of her life. They knew each other only six weeks and quickly tied the knot.
Vera was extremely talented and was rarely seen without some project in her hands. There wasn't a craft she couldn't tackle. When she saw a swatch of fabric, ball of yarn or sewing thread she knew she could use it for something. In her early years she made her children's clothing. Later she used her talents to make many beautiful quilts, of which family and friends were often delighted to be the recipients. Vera had a sweatshirt that read "He who dies with the most fabric wins." Vera Ratcliff is now in the running for first place.
She enjoyed crocheting with Yarn Spinners at Mount Pleasant Church, where her blankets would bless those in need.
Family was very important to Vera and she enjoyed gathering everyone around the table for a meal. The more that gathered the happier she was. She enjoyed making her famous peanut brittle for everyone during the holiday season. She shared the recipe with her daughters, but they think she left out an ingredient or two when she wrote it down because we were never able to match her excellence.
You could find Vera in her favorite chair every morning with a hot cup of coffee loaded with cream, and her well-worn Bible. Her faith was strong and her love for God was something she shared with those she encountered. Vera also volunteered her time at Mount Pleasant Church and kitchen, where she helped serve funeral meals to families following services.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob; and sister, Donna Pocic.
She is survived by her daughters; sisters, Barbara (Al) Reauh, Diane Boyd and Sandra Joiner; grandchildren, Theresa (Doug) Chubb, Erik Heng, Sharon (John) Silitti, Luke Engelhard and Morgan Radavich; and great-grandchildren, Kayle, Kendall, Lorin, Jordyn, Zachariah, Alexandria and David. She also is survived by many cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
A memorial service will be Thursday, June 22, 2017, at Mount Pleasant Church, 3050 E. Davis Drive, Terre Haute. Family visitation at 10 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Aaron Wheaton officiating.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Mount Pleasant Haiti Mission, Mount Pleasant Yarn Spinners, 3092 E.
