Susan Latta, 55, of Terre Haute, passed away at Union Hospital, April 18, 2017, following a battle with cancer. She was born in Brazil, March 15, 1962, the daughter of Robert J. Latta and Dorothy (Trout) Latta.
She graduated from Brazil High School in 1980 as the Valedictorian of her class. She earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in English education from Indiana State University and her Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition from Purdue University.
After graduation she crossed the country twice to teach at two private universities. She returned home to Terre Haute in 2001, and became a tenured professor at Indiana State. She assumed responsibility for the Writing Program, and specifically the mentoring of graduate teaching assistants in the program in 2010.
She was able to meld her professional and personal enthusiasm for popular culture and the media while introducing students to the key theoretical perspectives of the last half-century.
Susan was preceded in death by her father, Robert J. Latta; and a brother, Samuel LaRoy Latta.
Survivors include her mother, Dorothy Latta; and her beloved Westie Marlow; aunts, Virginia Leifheit and Rosemary Latta, both of Brazil; cousins, Pam Leifheit, Michael Latta, Kent Latta, Jayne Latta Grounds, James Latta, Melissa Trout Davis, Steve Trout and Doug Trout.
A memorial service will be held at Lawson-Miller Chapel, 1702 E. National Ave., Brazil, Saturday, April 22, 2017, at 2 p.m. Visitation will be at the funeral home, Saturday, from 1 p.m. until time of services.
