Sister Mary Imelda's Story

Sister Mary Imelda Coulup died on July 12, 2017, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born in Vincennes, Ind., on Aug. 28, 1918, to John C. and Clara Deusterberg Coulup, and was baptized Mary Elizabeth.
Sister Mary Imelda entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Feb. 11, 1939, and professed Final Vows Aug. 15, 1947. She earned a bachelor's degree from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master's degree from Indiana State University. In her 78 years as a Sister of Providence, Sister ministered for 53 years in elementary schools in Indiana, Illinois and Maryland. She taught at St. Ann in Terre Haute during the 1951-52 academic year, at St. Margaret Mary in Terre Haute from 1962 to 1967 and at St. Leonard in West Terre Haute in the 1967-68 academic year. In 1996, she retired from teaching and moved to the Motherhouse, where she gave service for 10 years as a driver and then gave general assistance in the Printery and the Office of Mission Advancement. Only in 2015, at the age of 96, did she leave these ministries to devote herself totally to the ministry of prayer.
Sister Mary Imelda loved being with people, both at work and play. Her kindness, as well as her great sense of humor, made people enjoy her company.
Sister is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Helen Morgan, Rita Piper and Catherine Zeigler; and one brother, John Coulup. The wake is from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 16, in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, with the wake service at 4:30 p.m. The mass of Christian burial is at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 17, with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. DeBaun Funeral Homes and Crematory assisted with arrangements.
