Norman Lee "Norm" Isbell, 81, passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at Harrison Crossings. He was born in Terre Haute, on Oct. 12, 1935, to Maurice and Helen Ruppel Isbell.
Norm was a graduate of Wiley High School, class of 1953. He graduated from Indiana State University in 1957, and received his master's degree in music in 1961. Norm retired as a music teacher and band and orchestra director in 1997. He had taught music and band for 40 years. He taught at North Central High School, Farmersburg, Princeton, Clay City, High Schools, and 36 years at Otter Creek Middle School, from which he retired.
For the past several years, Norm worked during the autumn at Pumpkin Works, Paris, Ill. He loved doing school tours and the children loved "Farmer Norm."
Norm was a member of the National Association for the Music Education, and a lifetime member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He also was a member of Union Christian Church. Norm felt honored to serve in the 451st Battalion of the Army and was a first sergeant in the U.S. Army Band.
On Aug. 17, 1986, Norm married Carol Walter Isbell.
Norm was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Carol; sons, Gregory Isbell and wife Cynthia, of O'Fallon, Mo., and Kevin Frye and his wife Sheryl of Denver; and daughter, Lana Watson and husband Bob of O'Fallon, Ill. Also surviving are grandchildren, Robert and wife Courtney Watson of Quincy, Ill., Caleb Watson of Brooklyn, N.Y., Alex Frye and Lauren Frye of Denver; and many other family members and friends.
A memorial celebration will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 N. 13th St., Terre Haute. Visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Pastor Todd Payton will be officiating. Musical selections will be provided by Mary Sue Jackson and Joe Craft. If friends so desire, contributions may be made to The Norman L.
