Text size

BRAZIL - Nancy A. Beachkofsky Haggerty, 73 of Brazil, passed away at her home, April 23, 2017, from complications due to pulmonary hypertension. She was born Dec. 29, 1943, in Indianapolis, the daughter of Wilton Albert Via and Louise Naomi Nation Via.
She graduated from Mooresville High School and then entered nursing school at Ball Memorial Hospital. After receiving her diploma, she had the opportunity to continue her nursing education and then achieved a master's degree in Community Health Nursing. Later through a government-sponsored program through Indiana University School of Nursing and School of Medicine she obtained the level of Family Nurse Practitioner. Nancy was a pioneer in the field of nurse practitioner in the Wabash Valley. She worked with Dr. Curt Oehler for many years in both the office and hospital. She worked at both Union Hospital, Terre Haute Regional Hospital and in many other clinical settings throughout the area. Nancy was also a professor in the Indiana State University, School of Nursing for over 20 years. She was a care-giver all her life, never expecting, but always giving back.
Nancy was an accomplished nurse and educator, but she would say her greatest accomplishment was her five children. She always gave more than she would expect back both at work, in her community, and at home. Her children were her most treasured part of life and she raised them with high expectations, and they did not disappoint.
Nancy educated herself on the Jewish religion when she and David Beachkofsky were married and she was a member of the United Hebrew Congregation in Terre Haute. Other memberships include Sigma Theta Tau, Nursing Honor Society and the Indiana State Nurses Association.
On June 21, 1996, Nancy was united in marriage to Dr. Fred Haggerty, he survives. Other survivors include her children, Michael Beachkofsky and wife Dr. Michelle Beachkofsky of Charlotte, N.C., Dr. Joel Beachkofsky and wife Dr. Angela Beachkofsky of Atlanta, Ga., Sarah Beachkofsky and husband Eric Moore of Hilton Head, S.C., Andrea Beachkofsky of South Bend, and Dr. Tom Beachkofsky and wife Dr. Jessica Beachkofsky of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, David, Parker, Chase, Ari, Adair, Amelia and Madison. Following her marriage to Fred, she gained three step-children, Fred Haggerty Jr. and wife Betty Jo Eden Prairie, Wis., Leslie Ann Lizarraga and husband Carlos, of Fort Wayne, and James Haggerty and wife Danimes "Donna" and step-grandchildren, Matthew, Nathan, Lucas, Carlos Jr., and Ana Marie; one brother, Daniel Via of Champaign, Ill.; two sisters, Rosemary Walter of Indianapolis, and Judy Via of Big Springs, Texas; and other extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, David Beachkofsky in 1992.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Lawson-Miller Chapel, 1702 E. National Ave., with Rabbi Lewis Weiss officiating and eulogy presented by Betsy Frank. Music provided by Steve McCullough. Burial will follow in Highland Lawn Cemetery, in Terre Haute. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, and again Thursday prior to the service. Her children will serve as pallbearers.
