Lyal A. Ling, 85, formerly of Terre Haute, passed away on April 22, 2017, in Indianapolis. Lyal was born in New Auburn, Wis., to Joel and Blanche Ling on Aug. 28, 1931.
Upon graduation Lyal entered the Air Force, where he served from 1951-1955. He moved to Battle Creek, Mich., where he joined Sears Roebuck & Company in management training. There he met and married his wife of 60 years, the former Phyllis Stone. He worked for Sears in management for 20 years until he moved to Terre Haute to take a management position at Meis Department Stores. He left Meis in 1979, to build and operate The Castle Car Wash in Honey Creek Square.
Lyal was a devoted family man, a natural athlete and musician who enjoyed time with his family, playing guitar, songwriting and sports (both as a fan and a player). He had an affinity with animals and doted on his household and backyard companions. Lyal served the community as a longtime member of the South Side Rotary, Jaycees, Junior Achievement & Indian Guides. He was affiliated with The Church of God, Seventh Day. He will be remembered as a light hearted, fun loving man with a great sense of humor
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis Jean Stone, whom he married march 2, 1957, in Battle Creek; three sons, Jeffrey Ling of Chillicothe, Ohio, Gregory (Carey) Ling of Spring Lake, Mich., and Robert (Megan) Ling, of Greenwood; three grandsons, Marshall Lin of Seattle, Dakota Ling of Atlanta and Keenon Burns of Spring Lake; a granddaughter, Jasmine (Jacob) Stark; and a great-grandson, Baylor Stark; sisters-in-law, Mary Ling, Nancy (Gary) Everling and Mary Sue (Phillip) Avery; and a brother-in-law, Donald Shafe; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; four sisters; and a brother-in-law.
Lyal chose to donate his body to medical science. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2017, from 11:3 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at Winchester Place in Greenwood. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army or the Humane Shelter.
