Larry O. Akers, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, 72, of Terre Haute, passed away at 10:48 p.m. Thursday, April 27, 2017, in his residence. He was born June 15, 1944, in Terre Haute. Larry is a retired Terre Haute Police Officer.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Linda (Kirby) Akers; daughters, Sherry Hartleroad (Brad) of Terre Haute, Christy Taylor (Richard) of West Terre Haute, and Jenny Todd (Mike) of Terre Haute; sons, Larry Akers Jr. (Dawn) and Lee Akers (Mary), both of West Terre Haute; sisters, Pat Stewart, Sue Chandler, Kathy Akers, and Debbie Fell, all of Terre Haute; brothers, Danny Akers and Eddie Akers, both of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Ryan Hartleroad, Jessica Akers, Cody Akers, Kayla Switzer, Allison Mauk, Josh Todd, Natalie Mauk, Emma Todd, and Reagan Taylor; great-grandchildren, Easton Hartleroad, Bryleigh Switzer, and Noah Akers; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Sharon Elliot; and brothers, Jimmy Gilbert, Ronnie Gilbert and Dale Akers.
Larry was a member of the former William Penn Lodge 727 Free & Accepted Masons; and currently the 12 Points Lodge 769 Free & Accepted Masons, the Kerman Grotto, the F.O.P. Lodge 85 and he was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves during the Vietnam War. Larry really enjoyed spending time with grandkids and great-grandkids.
Visitation will be Monday, May 1, 2017, from 4 until 7 p.m. in DeBaun Springhill Chapel with funeral services on Tuesday, May 2, 2017, at 10 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Rick Swan officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Roselawn Memorial Park. The Terre Haute Police Department will be providing an Honor Guard. Online condolences may be left at:
