Katrina "Kathy" Rene Sandifer-Hayes was born on May 24, 1956, in Baltimore, to her late parents, Vernal H. Smith Jr. and Mary Francis White-Flowers. She was raised by her great-grandmother, Elizabeth "Mum-Mum" Garrett in Baltimore, until she was 12 years of old. She then moved to Terre Haute, Ind., with her parents James Edward and Mary Francis Flowers.
Kathy held a title of many: a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, to name a few. She was the oldest sibling to 10 children, however, was the second oldest of 11. Kathy was known for her charismatic and spunky demeanor. She never met a stranger and her door was always open to whoever needed a place to stay. Her hobbies included coloring, decorating, gardening, not to mention the many barbecues and gatherings she hosted for family friends. Kathy was known for being chilled, relaxed, and easy to get to know through her jokes, laughter, and overall person. The smell of her cooking, especially fried chicken, there are really no words for that other than it brought in many.
Kathy's family was her pride and joy, and she ensured that her immediate family stayed close and together. In her early teenage years, Kathy met and quickly married the love of her life, Clarence E. Sandifer Sr., who preceded her in death in the summer of 2002. Together, they spent over 30 years as one, joining Saints Home Church of God in Christ and sharing seven children in between the years. The love between Kathy and Clarence was one that was admired by many and also inspired so many.
Kathy later moved to Columbus, Ohio, with Craig Hayes, and they married in 2009. The friendship and bond, built between within their time together, was a different love that was also admiring and inspiring to many. Through this, Kathy gained three more children, Allen Hayes, Bruce Hayes, and Kameka Lowery (Ocie). Craig preceded her in death in the winter of 2009.
Kathy leaves to cherish her memory to her four children, Clarence E. Sandifer Jr. (Kenya), Carla E. Sandifer (Charles), Katrina R. Sandifer (Kyle), and Chay'Lon E. Hodge (Nickolas); four sisters, Karen R. Williams, Donna J. Rice (Lawrence) Edith M.L. Flowers and Oleta Jackson; five brothers, Charles V.
