Friar Joel's Story
Friar Joel Burget, OFM Conv. died Friday, April 21, 2017, in Terre Haute. He was born Robert Joseph on June 17, 1939, in Terre Haute, to John R. Burget and Mildred (Rassel) Burget.
He attended minor seminary at Mount St. Francis, Ind., and entered the Conventual Franciscan Order in 1957. He professed Simple Vows on July 10, 1958, and Solemn Vows on Oct. 11, 1961. He was ordained a Priest on March 5, 1966, in St. Paul, Minn., Later that year, he left for Africa where he served as a missionary for 20 years in Zambia (formerly Northern Rhodesia). After returning to the U.S., he served in Chicago Heights, Milwaukee, Centralia, Ill., and for many years in Terre Haute.
He was pre-deceased by his parents, his sister, Sr. Ann Brendan, SP; and his brother, John. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Sally Jones of Beaumont, Texas; and five nieces and nephews.
On Sunday, April 23, 2017, visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. at St. Benedict Church in Terre Haute, with a wake service at 7:30 pm. There will be further visitation at St. Benedict's from 10 a.m. until noon Monday, April 24, 2017, followed by the funeral mass at 12:05 p.m. The body will be transferred to Mount St. Francis, where viewing will be Thursday, April 27, 2017, from 9:30 until 11 a.m. with remembrances beginning at 10:30. The Mass of Christian burial will begin at 11 a.m. followed by interment in the Friars' Cemetery at Mount St. Francis. DeBaun Funeral Homes in Terre Haute and Kraft Funeral Service in New Albany are handling arrangements.
