Frank Shelton, former administrator of Union Hospital, passed away on Wednesday, June 21, 2017, at the age of 73. Frank is survived by his wife, Linda Jo Climer Shelton; brother, Charles Shelton and Bill Shelton; daughters, Emily (Mike) Medlock and Angela (Brad) Caldwell; and his grandchildren, Max and Mae Medlock, and Ryan and Ben Caldwell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Margaret Shelton; and brother Edwin Shelton.
Frank was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and mentor. His life was spent in service to others. Frank served as hospital administrator at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Ind., for over 30 years. During his administration, he transformed health care with his visionary thinking. Through innovative programs and initiatives, Frank Shelton wanted to ensure that patients had access to the best healthcare available. Following his retirement from Union Hospital, Frank was the first executive director of the Indiana Rural Health Association.
Professionally, Frank was actively involved in healthcare. He was a member of the American College of Hospital Administrators, a delegate for the American Hospital Association Regional Advisory Board, a member of the board for the Indiana Hospital Association and a member of the board of directors for the Clarian Health Network. Frank also served as a preceptor for the St. Louis University Program in Hospital Administrators and a preceptor for the Indiana University Program in Health Care Administration.
As a community leader, Frank served on several local and state boards. These included the Indiana Medical Education Board, Indiana Vocational Technical College, Region VII, Terre Haute Medical Education Foundation, Visiting Nurse Association, Merchants National Bank, Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, the Covered Bridge Girl Scout Council Board and the Maryvale Senior Retirement Community.
Upon moving to Franklin, Tenn., Frank continued his work in healthcare as a member of the Tennessee Rural Health Association and served as an adjunct professor at Lipscomb University. As a member of Brentwood Hills Church of Christ, he was actively involved in African missions. He also enjoyed his Tuesday Morning Franklin Fellowship Group and his Friday morning Men's Group.
Visitation will be at Brentwood Hills Church of Christ in Nashville, Tenn., on Friday, June 23, 2017, from 4 until 8 p.m. and Saturday, June 24, 2017, from 1 until 2 p.m. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. at the church Saturday.
