Ethlynne's Story

Text size

Ethlynne L. McKee, 82, of South Bend, Ind., was called home on Aug. 2, 2017. Born, the youngest of seven, to Marcus and Edith Faubion, Feb. 5, 1935. She graduated from Terre Haute's Gerstmeyer High School in June of 1951. In August of 1957, she and her family moved to South Bend. Ethlynne was a stay-at-home mother until all her children were in school. At that time she enrolled at IUSB, eventually graduating summa cum laude with both bachelor's and master's degrees in elementary education. In the fall of 1970 she began teaching third grade at LaSalle Elementary School in Mishawaka, where she remained until her retirement in 1995. She was a longtime member of First Brethren Church and her church family was very important to her. She took great pleasure in being an active member of the church.
On Sept. 12, 1953, Ethlynne married her junior high school sweetheart, Ronald Gene McKee, also of Terre Haute, with whom she shared 61 years of marriage. She walked through life hand in hand, one strong when the other was weak, one brave when the other was unsure, loving each other - more than yesterday, less than tomorrow. Together they enjoyed being with friends, playing cards and their many years of memorable travel with brother Carl McKee and Betty, and dear friends Bill and Rea Linville. Ethlynne had a lifelong love of music and had played the piano most of her life. She also enjoyed entertaining friends, reading, knitting and time with her sewing club. Above all, she loved her family and made them feel treasured. She planned holiday travel, sleeping arrangements and meals and became lovingly known as "the director." She was the family memory bank, recalling hundreds of entertaining anecdotes.
Ethlynne's strong faith in her Lord enabled her to meet the challenges of life with remarkable grace. In later years, she tenaciously overcame physical trials that have dampened many a spirit. She was humble, acknowledging her blessing even in times of trouble. Her sense of humor led her to laugh at herself in tough circumstances. Ethlynne lived her life in a way that inspires us to take not a single day for granted.
Ethlynne was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald; her mother and father; brothers, Edwin, Gene, Billy and Don Faubion; and sisters, Bette DeLay and Patty Mason; and two nephews. She is survived by her children, Greg (Sharon) McKee of Bryant, Ark., Julie (Dave) Shinevar of LaPorte, Ind., and Brian (Tracy) McKee of South Bend, Ind.; grandchildren, Randi (Joe) Gormong of Terre Haute, Ind., Jill (Chuck) Carnes of Rockford, Mich., Steven (Caitlin) McKee of Little Rock, Ark., Amanda (Brett) McKee of Longmont, Colo., and Kelsey Davis of Little Rock, Ark.; and great-grandbabies, her little sunshines, Rachel, Madelyn, Rebekah, Amelia, Kaytee, Colin, Brandon, Hadley and baby boy McKee due in September.
