Elvin Eugene "Sonny" Hawkins, 74, of Terre Haute, passed away in his home on March 14, 2017. He was born on May 31, 1942, to Elwood and Zintka Burkholder Hawkins, in Terre Haute, Indiana. Sonny served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church. Sonny loved to travel, and took several trips on his motorcycle. He was a big fan of Notre Dame football, as well as the Chicago Bears football. Sonny was a bit of a history buff, and loved learning about the past, collecting antiques and guns, as well.
Sonny was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Darlene Olsen.
He is survived by his special friend, Judy Ladow; a son, Kelly Hawkins and his wife Belinda; daughters, Shari Hawkins, Tammy Hawkins and Lisa Hawkins; brothers, Timothy Hawkins and his wife Susan, and Patrick Hawkins and his wife Rita; sisters, Brenda Diebert and her husband Art, and Peggy Bermudez; and grandchildren, Kelly Eugene Hawkins Jr., Kloe Hawkins, Gabrielle Sappington, Grace St. John, Faith St. John, Scott Blake, Leah Blake, Courtney Stinson, Jeff Stinson, Megan Denton, Kaitlyn Dayhoff, Abbie Dayhoff, Isaac Dayhoff, Lauren Ladow and Brach Ladow. Also surviving are several great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, March 20, 2017, in St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. until service time at the church. Friar Mark Weaver will be holding mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, along with military rites by VFW #972.
