Dick W. Persinger, 84, of Terre Haute, passed away Monday, April 24, 2017, at Signature Healthcare. He was born Nov. 19, 1932, the second oldest of five children, to Grover Calvin Persinger and Irene Catherine (Neiswinger) Persinger, in Saline City.
He graduated from Ashboro High School where he played basketball. In 1953 Dick was drafted in the U.S. Army to serve in the Korean War. He served his country for two years in Company - C-7th Calvary Regiment - Light Weapons Infantryman from March 23, 1953 to March 22, 1955. He was given the National Defense Service Medal. Dick came home from the military and got a job working for Hulman and Company. He then later, made his long-term career as a semi-truck driver for Gibson Coal Company. He earned several awards for perfect driving record.
Dick married Roberta Webster on Feb. 20, 1959. They met while working at Hulman and Company. They had three children, Richard, Robert and Kimberly; whom are all married with families.
Dick loved all things outdoors and being close with nature. Some of his activities included, gardening, working in the yard, fishing, hunting - especially mushrooms, snapping turtles, squirrels and rabbits, bowling and old timers softball in Saline City. Dick was very active over the years in various organizations: Riley American Legion, Masonic Lodge, Riley Lodge 390, Moose Lodge of Brazil, Clay City Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Zorah Shrine Oriental Band.
Dick was preceded in death by his second wife, Imogene Persinger on Sept. 5, 2012; his older sister, Polly Johnson; and his parents.
Dick is survived by his sons, Richard Persinger (Betty) of Webb City, Mo., and Robert Persinger (Lisa) of Mount Washington, Ky.; daughter, Kim Stevenson (David) of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Nathan Persinger, Zachary Persinger (Deanna), LeTitia Persinger, and Kaitlyn Brussell (Cory); great-grandchildren, Shailyn Persinger and Adalynn Persinger; brothers, Ralph Persinger (Janice) of Clay City and Larry Persinger (Rita) of Brazil; and sister, Debbie Reed of Saline City.
Visitation is scheduled for Friday, April 28, 2017, from 4 until 7 p.m. at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th St., Terre Haute. Funeral services will be Saturday, April 29, 2017, at 11 a.m. with visitation from 10 a.m. until time of service. Masonic services at 10:30 a.m. Andy Fishback will officiate services. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. VFW Post 972 will be conducting military graveside services. In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to Shriners Childrens Hospital.
