COAL CITY - Cleotis Roscoe Klass, 99, of Coal City, passed away June 24, 2017, at Shakamk Nursing Home, in Jasonville. Cleotis was born Aug. 12, 1917, in Lebanon, the son of the late Luther and Dora Mae (Mishler) Klass.
He graduated from Coal City High School in 1935. Cleotis married the love of his life, Martha Mae (Fouts) Klass, on June 8, 1940. She preceded him in death in March 2004. He worked as a farmer until the 1980's when he became a substitute mail carrier in Coal City. Cleotis eventually retired from the United States Postal Service as a carrier. He also worked at the Coal Mine in Riley, Clay Plant in Brazil, hauled livestock, and was a school bus driver. He served as the Jefferson Township Trustee, was a charter member of the Coal City Volunteer Fire Department, and was very active in the Democrat Club. Cleotis enjoyed mowing his and his neighbor's yard, working in his garden, farming, church activities, and being with his neighbors. Cleotis was a lifelong resident of Coal City and he enjoyed living there. He was a member of Steubenville Lutheran Church, and also attended Coal City Baptist Church and Jasonville Assembly of God Church.
In addition to his parents and wife of 59 years, he was preceded in death by his infant son and his sister, Gladys Willen Marshall.
Cleotis is survived by his children, Janice (Ron) Harris and Max (Mary) Klass; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Florence Huey; as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Services will be Saturday, July 1, 2017, at 1 p.m. at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, in Clay City, with Pastor Samuel Bush officiating. Burial will follow at Beech Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday at 11 a.m. until time of the service at the funeral home. Musical selections will be provided by Mr. Stephen McCullough.
