Betty's Story

Betty Florence Alcorn, 86, of West Terre Haute, passed away at 10:02 a.m. Friday May 5, 2017, at Union Hospital in Terre Haute. She retired from Indiana State University after 29 years of service, where she worked in the Current Periodicals department in the student library. She had previously been employed with the Vigo County Parks Department, where she worked as a naturalist, mainly at Dobbs Park Nature Preserve and also at Fowler Park, as well as other parks in the county. She was born Sept. 9, 1930, in Terre Haute, to Paul Alcorn and Frances Eppert Alcorn Farmer.
Survivors include three sisters, Linda L. Kellams (John) and Janice McConkey, all of West Terre Haute, and Judy Farmer of Portland, Ore.; nieces and nephews, John W. Kellams (Cheryl), Tammy Kellams, David Kellams and Curtis Kellams (Jennifer); and many great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her father; her mother and stepfather, Frances Farmer and Wesley S. Farmer Sr.; a sister, Joan Lively; two brothers, James Farmer and Wesley S. Farmer Jr.; and her best friend, Gean Hill.
Betty was a graduate of the Fayette High School Class of 1948 and later a graduate of the Indiana State University Class of 1973, having earned a master's degree. She loved the outdoors and nature. She loved hiking and sightseeing, and had traveled extensively around the U.S. to do so. She loved her dogs and cats and all animals. She enjoyed watching "Jeopardy" and was quick to answer most questions, and she enjoyed older country music.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 11, 2017, in Fitzpatrick Funeral Home, with Pastor Andrew Black officiating. Burial will be in Pleasantview Cemetery. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until the service time Thursday. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Terre Haute Humane Society with envelopes available in the funeral home.
