William R. Hite, 101, of Terre Haute, passed away Sunday, March 19, 2017, at 1:11 p.m., in his residence. William was an electrician for Mobile Oil Refinery in Chicago and had owned several gas stations in California. He was born Aug. 9, 1915, in Terre Haute, to Lorenzo Dowell Hite and O'Tilley (Kalin) Hite. He is survived by his wife, Marguerite (Forbes) Hite, with whom he just celebrated 79 years of marriage on Jan. 16.
Other survivors include nieces and nephews, Ron Jennings (Erma) of Shelbyville, Ill., Pam "Pammy SueSue" Irwin and Leora Sumner, both of California, Judy Chamness of Terre Haute, Mike Roberts of Eden, N.C., Nancy Novak of Virginia Beach, Va., Tillie Powers of Lewis, Ind., and Betty Borders of Jasonville; and great-great-nephews, Justin Lane, Jason Smathers and Aaron Smathers. He was preceded in death by sisters, Beulah Jennings, Emma Schneble and Leona Jones.
William was a U.S. Navy Seabees during WWII and was a 75-year member of Santa Barbara Lodge #192 F&AM.
Visitation is from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2017, in Samaritan Funeral Home, 2425 Wabash Ave., with Masonic memorial services at 1 p.m. in the funeral home, provided by West Terre Haute Masonic Lodge #687 F&AM. Burial will be in Highland Lawn Cemetery with military honors provided at the graveside.
