USN Ret. Capt. Dorothy's Story

Dorothy Jane (Dot) Effner, 90, of Fleming Island, Fla., passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2017. Dot was born on Nov. 1, 1926, in Terre Haute, Ind., to the late Ehrman and Marie Okes Effner.
She was a 1944 graduate of Glenn High School and a 1947 graduate of the School of Nursing at Methodist Hospital of Indiana in Indianapolis.
Dot enlisted in the Navy on Dec. 27, 1956, as a lieutenant JG (Nurse Corps). During her Naval career she served at Naval hospitals in San Diego and Oakland, Calif.; Kokosuka and Sasebo, Japan; Bethesda, Md.; Pensacola and Jacksonville, Fla.; and Danang, Vietnam. Dot was the first Nurse Corps officer assigned to Danang, Republic of Vietnam (August 1967-July 1968). She directed the activities of 14 corpsmen and 20 nurses. She devoted numerous hours planning and developing a 30-bed intensive care addition to this facility, which greatly assisted 1,400 severely injured patients treated in the intensive care unit. She was given the Navy Commendation Medal for this meritorious service. She received two more Gold Stars in lieu of the Navy Commendation Medal during her career. She retired from the United States Navy with the rank of captain on May 17, 1977.
Dot is survived by brothers, James Effner (Nancy) and Richard Effner; brother-in-law, Grover Allen Sr.; numerous nieces and nephews; and dear friends, Elizabeth "Cissy" Lorch and Willar Spencer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ehrman and Marie Okes Effner; brother, Owen Effner (Elizabeth); sisters, Evelyn Knecht (Lee) and Caroline Allen; and sister-in-law, Barbara Effner.
Hardage Giddens Rivermead Funeral Home of Orange Park, Fla., will be handling the cremation and she will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., with full military honors, at a later date.
