Thelbert Ozon Higgins (a.k.a. T.O.) was born Feb. 4, 1931, to the late John and Sarah Higgins in Terre Haute. He was one of eight children and attended elementary, secondary and high school in Terre Haute. He passed away Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017.
He served our country in the U.S. Army in the Korean War and received a Purple Heart Medal for his service. After returning home from the military, he married Cynthia G. Lawrence, the love of his life, in 1954. To this union was born two sons, Phillip and Marvin Higgins.
Thelbert was employed at General Motors Corporation in Flint, Mich., and enrolled in General Motors Institute in the Skilled Trades Curriculum. He graduated from this program as a tool and die maker. He worked there for many years before his retirement.
Thelbert was a sports car enthusiast who enjoyed attending car shows, collecting cars and used his skills to build and repair them. He was compassionate, caring, had a good heart and always willing to assist anyone who needed help.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John Higgins; sisters, Sarah E. Higgins Boone, M. Bernice Sibley Thomas, M. Elaine Higgins, Alfreda Y. Higgins Buckner and Joan Higgins Meeks; nephews, Lorenzo, Joe Jr. and Theodore.
Thelbert leaves to mourn his sons, Phillip and Marvin (Nancy); sister, Edythe Higgins Washington; sister-in-law, Bertie Lee Higgins; nieces, Candy, Jewel, Laura Lee, Henrietta, Regina, Zelda and Renita: nephews, Charles, Wilbur, John, Lester, Vincent, Kenneth and "Topper"; and a host of cousins, extended family and Friends.
Calling Only - Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Russell Funeral Home. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery.
