Steven Eugene McConnell

October 06, 1955 - November 24, 2018

Steven Eugene McConnell Steven Eugene McConnell was born in Vincennes, Indiana, to Helen and Eugene McConnell on October 6, 1955, and moved to Terre Haute shortly afterward. He attended Vigo County elementary schools and Laboratory (State) High School. As a young man he spent a short time living in Florida but otherwise resided in Terre Haute all of his life. He was a carpenter and later a carpenter superintendent but had retired due to health problems. He was a member of the Carpenters Union Local 133.
Steve played trombone in the church of his baptism, Gospel Assembly, as a young man. He raised two children who were the love of his life, along with his grandchildren. He loved to cook, to garden, to go camping and fishing and mushroom hunting in the spring, and he loved music. Before his eyesight became impaired he was a voracious reader. He was known for his kindness and generosity of spirit and tried to help anyone who was in need whether it was buying diapers for their baby or giving them a short-term place to stay. He also loved antiques and often browsed local businesses looking for such or for furniture which he could refinish and give to others.
He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene McConnell; and by one granddaughter, Jessie; his grandparents; and numerous aunts and uncles. He is survived by his mother, Helen McConnell of Port Orange, Florida; two children, Steven Ryan McConnell of Terre Haute, Indiana, and Rebecca Congleton (Joe) of Augusta, Georgia; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Aldridge (Victor), of Terre Haute; grandchildren, Olivia, Brode and Sean; and step-grandchildren, Briona, Cadence and Taylor; a brother, Thomas McConnell (Lisa) of Port Orange, Florida; and a sister, Beth Wootton (William) of Ellettsville, Indiana; and several nieces and nephews,

Steve was so fun to be around when we were growing up. He had Eugene's humor. Not only did we go to church together we also went to the same school. Only class we had together was driver's ed. I'm sorry for your loss. Your family had always been special to me and my family. My prayers are with you.

Tired of thinking sad things,so I will make it my goal to watch Christmas Vacation and think of you putting it on during Christmas dinner even though the language made Grandma blush and knowing it was twice as funny to you because she disapproved. Also this rhyme will stay with me forever: Betty Betty, two by four, couldn't get through the bathroom door, so she peed on the floor.

Dad, I will miss your sense of humor most.
