Sophia's Story

Text size

Sophia Geraldine Tompkins departed this world and returned to her heavenly home on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017, surrounded by her family.
She was born in Mount Vernon, on Nov. 12, 1930, to the late Rachel Boone Acuff and Clifford Acuff. She was one of 12 children.
Sophia was a true servant of God and shared her love of Christ with everyone she knew. Her life was about serving the church and the community. Everything she did was to glorify God. Sophia served tirelessly on the Missionary Board, the Mother Board and the Usher Board.
Sophia graduated from Wiley High School and was the first African-American female at Wiley who was elected amongst her peers to represent the Queen's Court. After graduating Sophia met and then later married the love of her life, Aaron Joiner Tompkins Sr., on April 15, 1950. Aaron preceded her in death April 21, 2006. Sophia and Aaron were married for 56 years and to this union six sons were born, Orville (Judy), Aaron Jr., Benjamin Sr. (Sheree), Gary, Leonard and Tommy (Deidra); and special daughter, Yvette Waller.
Sophia was employed by the Hyte Community Center for over 30 years, where she served as the director, and was affectionately known by everyone as Ms. Sophie. Sophia became a pioneer of the community and was recently honored as a History Heritage Hero for her role as a community advocate. Her hard work and dedication to the Terre Haute community will not be forgotten.
Sophia leaves fond memories to be cherished by her sons and special daughter, a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, with funeral services at 1 p.m. at Saints Home Church of God in Christ, 2210 N. 13th St., Terre Haute, Ind., with Elder Curt Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in the Grandview Cemetery.
The sacred trust was given to the Smith, Bizzell and Warner Funeral Home.
