Sister Sheila's Story
Sister Sheila FitzSimons, died at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, April 1, 2017, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born in Indianapolis, on Dec. 2, 1926, to Philip J. FitzSimons and Marie Agnes Basso FitzSimons and was baptized Rosemary. Her family moved to Van Nuys, Calif. In her early years, where the Sisters of Providence had a parish school.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Feb. 2, 1943, and professed Final Vows Aug. 15, 1950. She earned a bachelor's degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and a master's degree from Loyola University in Los Angeles. Of her 74 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered in education for 56 years, serving for 16 years in Indiana, Illinois, and New Hampshire schools and 40 years to schools in California. She served as principal for 17 of those years. In 1998, she moved to New Albany, Ind. where she was an adult educator at Providence Self-Sufficiency Ministries. In 2002, she returned to the motherhouse, where she served her sisters as a driver. Beginning in 2010, she committed herself totally to the ministry of prayer.
What one noticed first about Sister Sheila were her sparkling eyes and quick wit. She was a woman of deep compassion. When Providence Health Care was opened to lay people, Sister Sheila went out of her way to make them feel welcome.
Sister is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Cathleen Moutes; and two brothers, Philip Fitzsimons Jr. and John FitzSimons.
The wake is Wednesday, April 19, 2017, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception with the wake service at 4:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial is Thursday, April 20, 2017, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. DeBaun Funeral Homes and crematory assisted with arrangements.
