Sister Richard's Story
Sister Richard Bussing died Sept. 5, 2017, in Mother Theodore Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born Jan. 10, 1922, in Brazil, to Sylvester and Agnes Klein Bussing, and was baptized Dorothy Ann.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Jan. 6, 1940, and professed Final Vows on Aug. 15, 1948. Sister earned a bachelor's degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College. Of her 77 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered for 35 years teaching in elementary schools in Illinois, North Carolina, California and Texas. In 1977 she retired from teaching and gave five years of service as a driver at the Motherhouse. She then moved to Missoula, Mont., and ministered as a caregiver to the elderly and for a few years, served as a pastoral associate at a local parish. In 2004 she returned to the Motherhouse and shared her many talents with the community there. Beginning in 2016, she committed herself totally to the ministry of prayer
Sister Richard was a free spirit who loved being outdoors. She could often be found in one of the patios tending to whatever was growing. She was skilled in many crafts including quilting, banner making, and macrame, and made many Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls through the years. While in Montana, she grew to appreciate the Native American culture, and this influenced both her art and her spirit.
Sister Richard is survived by two brothers, Sylvester F. (Frank) Bussing of West Terre Haute and Jerome E. (Gene) Bussing of Granada Hills, Calif.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Bussing; and two sisters, Sister Eleanor Bussing, SP and Sister Francis Eugene Bussing, SP.
The wake will begin at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, 2017. and end with the commentary at 11 a.m. The Mass of Christian burial will immediately follow the commentary. The Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus will preside. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. DeBaun Funeral Homes and Crematory assisted with arrangements.
