Sister Mary Michael's Story

Sister Mary Michael Lager of St. Mary-of-the-Woods, died at 3:58 a.m. July 8, 2017, in Mother Theodore Hall. She was born on Nov. 19, 1918, in New Orleans, to Fred J. and Frances M. Schoendienst Lager and was baptized Lucille Frances.
Sister Mary Michael entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on July 17, 1936, and professed Final Vows Jan. 23, 1945. In her 81 years as a Sister of Providence, Sister ministered for 10 years as an elementary teacher in schools in Indiana and Illinois. Having earned a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from Purdue University in 1953, she ministered as pharmacist at the Motherhouse for 37 years. Retiring from this in 1990, she served on the staff of the Congregation Office of Congregational Advancement for seven years and then ministered in a variety of ways at the Motherhouse. Beginning in 2004, she committed herself totally to the ministry of prayer.
Sister Mary Michael was known for her kindness, especially to the sick. Raised on a farm, she had a great love for the fruits of the earth. Year after year she planted and tended several flower gardens and regularly gathered such things as black walnuts, apples, and berries form the motherhouse campus.
Sister is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Ann Lager, Flora Richler and Dorothy Lager Weiss; stepbrothers, Lawrence and Edward Korte and Frank Lager; and stepsister, Clara Lager.
The wake will be Wednesday, July 12, 2017, from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. in the Church of the Immaculate Conception with the wake service at 4:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian burial is Thursday, July 13, 2017, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Daniel R. Hopcus presiding. Burial is in the cemetery of the Sisters of Providence. DeBaun Funeral Homes and Crematory assisted with arrangements.
