Sister Margaret's Story
Sister Margaret Ann Wilson died on Dec. 7, 2017, in Lourdes Hall, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born on Dec. 16, 1927, in Oklahoma City, to Granville B. and Marguerite Busken Wilson.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Jan. 9, 1946, and received the name Sister Ann Gerard. She professed final vows Aug. 15, 1953. She earned a bachelor's degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College and master's degree from Indiana State University. Of her 71 years as a Sister of Providence, she ministered as teacher for 43 years in schools in Indiana, Illinois and Oklahoma. She taught primary grades at St. Mary-of-the-Woods Village School in the 1953-54 academic year and served at the Cara School in Terre Haute from 1971 to 1973.
Beyond her loving care of the young children whom she taught so well, Sister Margaret Ann had a natural skill and concern for the sick. She ministered in the Motherhouse infirmary from 1954 to 1962. After her retirement from teaching, she remained in the Chicago area, accompanying sisters to visits to doctors and looking after their pre- and post-surgery needs. She returned to the Motherhouse in 2013 and continued to serve as a companion to sisters on visits to doctors. Only in her last months did she give up this ministry, but she still tended to the medical needs of sisters in her residence, Providence Hall.
Sister is survived by nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, Edward and G.B. "Bud" Wilson.
